Definition of launch failure
I seem to remember discussing this back awhile. What did we decide? If a launch vehicle performs perfectly, delivering its payload to the proper orbit, but the payload then malfunctions for whatever reason, is that considered a launch failure? The nose faring ejecting was not a necessary function of launch, even though the mission failed (because the idiots who prepared it for launch didn't know what "those wires" were for, because they didn't work for the right company), but the Atlas SLV-3 did its job.
Also, little or nothing is told about the other flights. How did they fail? JustinTime55 (talk) 21:07, 5 August 2014 (UTC)
- I agree the propulsive part of the flight was successful, but I would call fairing separation part of the launch and the fairing part of the rocket (admittedly it had an unusual configuration on the ATDA launch in that it was mounted on top of the payload). We don't consider OCO or Glory to be successful launches even though the propuslive elements of the rockets performed as expected; I don't see how this one is different just because it happened to have sufficient margins to reach orbit. The cause of the mission's failure was an anomaly with a part of the rocket, during the launch, which I would consider to be the very definition of a launch failure. With regards human error, other launches which have failed because of stupid mistakes (FLTSATCOM-6, the first Proton/DM-03M, etc) are all considered failures and if you look in enough detail a very large proportion of failures eventually come down to an individual doing (or forgetting) something stupid. --W. Recycling the Launching/ATV template?
Hi, with the last ATV off the pad the Template:Launching/ATV template is now retiring. Since you have recycled the Kosmos 3M template some time before, may I ask if that can be recycled as well? Most probably the best use of it is using it for Falcon 9/Falcon Heavy flights out of Vandenberg AFB, as requested sometime ago and probably will have a sufficient flight rate to keep at least 2 launch templates for both coasts. What's your opinion? Galactic Penguin SST (talk) 08:11, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
